Challenge
The traditional course development cycle at this international construction company spanned 8 to 12 months—too slow to meet the urgent needs of the construction firm’s project in Colorado. Project leaders needed a solution that could prepare engineers with field-relevant, hands-on skills in weeks, not months.
Approach
Mel Aclaro introduced a Lean Startup-inspired MVP methodology to rapidly design and deliver a two-day blended learning concrete placement workshop. The course comprised self-paced video instruction, supported by virtual Instructor-Led Training (vILT) discusssions, live ILT classroom instruction, and the deployment of a live field “university” site for hands-on instruction.
By leveraging iterative development, stakeholder feedback loops, and site-specific learning activities—including use of construction technology tools like Bluebeam and Autodesk, the course went from concept to delivery in just eight weeks. The solution emphasized real-world application, modular scalability, and continuous improvement.
Results
The workshop exceeded expectations across multiple feedback metrics:
Concept to pilot delivery: 8 weeks
4.5 average satisfaction score
Strong relevance to on-the-job tasks
Significant increase in learner confidence and hands-on readiness
Participants praised the balance of practical skill-building and expert insight. The success of the MVP approach positioned the program for repeatable rollout across other projects, embedding adaptability and speed into the organization’s learning model.
